What's good everybody?? Yes I am still alive after some big storm that everyone seems to be talking about! It missed us! Hah it hit the whole eastern half of the mission and church was cancelled all over the place! Not in Fredonia! No sir. We keep gooooinnnn. So yeahhhh we are fine, and we had a pretty good week!
You know the drill.
Tuesday
We met with Barbara again! She's the lady that wants to come back to church after she took her name off the records! We read with her in 3 Nephi 11 which in my opinion is one of the best chapters of the Book of Mormon! She really enjoyed it and likes when we come by! We also did some finding and we spoke a lot of Spanish!! It was an answer to prayer! My buddy Elder Kendell told me that if we want specific blessings we need to pray for specific things! I took that to heart and have been praying for more Spanish opportunities! We definitely got them today!! Holy cats. We met some Puerto Ricans that were interested so we'll see where that goes! We also topped the day off with some hard core balling. Some real futbol if you will. We were invited by one of the less actives we teach to come play soccer with him and his gang of homies tonight so we did!! Elder Ekins played four years of soccer in high school so he was pretty pumped and I was just like well we'll see what my years of golf have done for me. Turns out I scored a goal playing with straight Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. Please hold the applause. I think our PR rating here in Fredonia has gone up 10 fold after tonight! I talked to this kid named Jesus for awhile and got his address! He took it upon himself to open up to me and tell me his life story so I was like dang son slow down! He seemed pretty interested and if we can get past his drinking and smoking problems we'll be dapper. Be grateful for the Word of Wisdom boys and girls. Over all super successful day getting the church's name out there!
Wednesday
Had the worldwide missionary broadcast which was pretty cool! I felt like there were some good things for me to take from it! After that we saw the Matos which was nice! You'll never hear me complain about Spanish lessons. I love practicing!! They're doing better and she's been coming back to church! We also had dinner with a less active which is always stellar. 2 birds with one stone. After that we survived a blizzard coming back home, so I'm happy to still have my baby Jeep in good shape.
Thursday
Had a busy day out in the Westfield area! There is a lot of work to be done over there! We have so many names and not enough time. It's basically a 40 mile round trip just to get to Westfield and when you only have about 35 miles a day it doesn't work out too well... We saw a few less actives and met with a member who I hadn't met yet! When we got to his home he said: "Mormons! I thought y'all must have died." Nahh we're still kicking as far as I know. He was super grateful for our visit and his house was full of people! We need to go back there and teach them!!
Friday
Both of our appointments cancelled so we ended up going and trying some potentials! Turns out one of our soccer homies isn't actually interested... haha pretty used to that though! We got some solid weekly planning done and yeah!
Saturday
Had interviews with president! Always a good time when he comes! I love talking to and learning from him! After that we had a lesson with Sally who is our "Mor-Wit" haha she's awesome and cracks me up! She wants to change and get things straight so that's good!!
Sunday
Started the day off with a nice talk in church by yours truly. Last talk I gave was my first week as a missionary in Spanish, so it was nice to have a little more experience under my belt and in a language I actually know how to speak! I talked about the power of prayer and I felt like it went pretty well! I talked for 20 minutes and I finally just spoke from bullet points. Don't know why I didn't do that before, but it was a lot easier and felt more natural! I remember preparing for my farewell and getting 10 minutes down was a struggle! I feel like I've definitely grown as a public speaker! Anyyyyyways the rest of the day was pretty chill! We went and tried this one lady named Rosa who is a former investigator. She doesn't speak a lick of English which I don't mind because that means Spanish time. She's of course from Puerto Rico because there is no other type of Latino in New York. She also speaks way too fast and doesn't say her "s." Ever. It sounds like this: somo latino unido tú sabe. For you members of the Spanish gang you know we're missing 4 "s's" there. Haha anyways turns out she's hard core Pentacostal which is always super fun, but she says we can stop by so we will see. Haha if you've never prayed with a Pentacostal you should. It's always surprising to hear them start speaking in tongues as you pray. I still don't know what to do so I just pray on. Other than that we taught a few more lessons to some less actives and did our studies!
This week as I prepared my talk one of my favorite church songs came to mind which is in the children's song book. I love how these songs teach simple principles that kids can take into their hearts! Here are the lyrics:
Heavenly Father, are you really there?
And do you hear and answer ev’ry child’s prayer?
Some say that heaven is far away,
But I feel it close around me as I pray.
Heavenly Father, I remember now
Something that Jesus told disciples long ago:
“Suffer the children to come to me.”
Father, in prayer I’m coming now to thee.
I love the simple prayer of this kid!! Sometimes when we get so busy with life and what not we just need to step back and ask our Heavenly Father if he's really there and if he will hear and answer our prayers. I promise you he does! That was my cool spiritual thought for the week. Really think about those words!!
Quote of the week from a less active we taught:
"If you got a secret you tell God cause he ain't gonna tell nobody." -Charley Marshall
Remember that boys and girls. Anyways that's all for today! Remember who you are and what you stand for.
Peace and blessings,
Elder Halls
