Oye,
This week started out hot with some good appointments on Tuesday. We got to see some of the less actives that we didn't get around to last week and had powerful lessons with them. We're working on using the Book of Mormon more in follow up visits and it works really well. It's seems so simple but a lot of people we teach struggle to read so I guess I haven't done it as much as I should. Time to change. We had an amazing lesson with Dorothy and we did a practice baptismal interview with her. She believes and knows everything she should but is still working on cutting back those cigarettes. She's determined to cut those things out of her life and committed to be done today! We're praying for the best and she is too. She should be getting baptized on the 13th if all goes well. 👍🏽 In other news, things went better with Jorge this week. We taught the word of wisdom and obviously because of his "golden-ess", he didn't have a problem with it. We got into who is the Holy Ghost at the end of the lesson which was such an answer to prayer. I feel like if we can help him understand who the Holy Ghost is things will start happening because he'll want to have that gift with him. We're hoping to take that path at least!
Wednesday was fantastic as well especially at night. We stopped by Don's house and he had just finished all of first Nephi! Woah. 😳 He believes it's true so we went through the steps and reinvited him to be baptized on May 20th. He accepted and is super excited about it. It was an awesome visit and I'm pumped for Don! That night ended with a golden finding opportunity. We called one of our new referrals Jose and he said we could stop by for a little bit that night but that he was a little busy. We said we'd be quick and started to drive to his house. We get there and of course there's another Fiesta going on except this time no cerveza and there were just 12 people all sitting around the living room waiting for us. I thought this could either be really good or totally crazy and it turned out amazing. We got to know them a little bit and showed Prince of Peace. It was money and turned into a good conversation of the thorns in our lives. Ahhh it was so fun to teach them and they were mostly Colombian (Shout out to Eddy) which made it even better! They gave us the "my house is your house" card so we're pretty pumped to go back and teach them! Hopefully all goes well! Such a blessing to be able to teach them and get to know them!
We've been working with a less active lady named Nicky since I got here and she's starting to make progress! She came to church on Sunday and our lessons are starting to head in the right direction. It's all about the rescue. We saw Erica on Thursday and that woman is in a tight spot. She doesn't have any support from her husband so it's hard for her to lead the charge and change the family. We're praying for a miracle so that his heart will be softened. After an amazing dinner with the Dushku's that night we headed to Dorothy's to get her pumped for her baptism. The jumpsuit is going to fit her and she's excited!
This weekend I found myself in Swissvale for another exchange. We spent most of the morning doing service for a recent convert who was moving within the ward. It went pretty well and he invited some buddies that we got to talk to a little bit. They were super cool and just the fact that they were there probably made it the most successful missionary move ever. After that we headed deep to go visit some of their investigators who both bailed on us. Tender mercy of it all was once we got to the bus stop Elder Jarvis realized we still had half an hour until the next bus came... Where's the good news in that? We started tracting. We didn't get too far because the first door we knocked turned out to be a member. 😳 What are the odds? Suuuupeer small. This guy opens the door and says: "Ahh, Mormons." I was low key expecting a bash. Turns out the guy joined the church out in South Dakota and was super grateful for all the good people he met and still has contact with a lot of members of the church. His records have definitely been lost along the way but it was so good to talk to him. You never know what you'll find in East Pittsburgh but I think we were guided there for sure. After that we talked to some brothas in the streets and enjoyed some dinner. Quite the day!
Sunday was another good one. Don and Tammy made it out to church along with Dorothy. Soooo good to see them there. Our main man Jorge has been bailing on us so we'll have to see what's going on there. After church things kept getting better as we helped translate another temple recommend interview part 2 for the Reyes! They're all set to go to the temple on the 19th and they also got their patriarchal blessings last night! We love the Reyes. Don called us after church and said "That was it." A member told him to go read 3 Nephi 11 and he did and received his answer. He said: "When the Lord speaks, I recognize it." Don has a lot of faith and his wife practically put herself on date for the 20th as well. Good things are happening in our neck of the woods. They've been a great example of the Book of Mormon being the most powerful tool in conversion. Don loves it and talks about how he wants to be a "goodly" parent. 😂 We wrapped up the night with out Colombian friends and taught them the restoration. It went super well and they were very involved in what we were teaching. The spirit was definitely there and Ro (The mom) told us she felt chills as we shared the Joseph Smith story. We pointed out that it was the spirit and Ahh it was so good. We're excited to keep teaching them!
Random Thoughts
- We made a special "treat yourself" trip to Burgatory this week. It's still worth every penny.
- I finally finished the Spanish grammar book they give you in the MTC. 388 pages of grammar complete. ☑️
Well folks, we've been blessed this week. The Lord is preparing the hearts of his children and it's our job as members of the church to invite. We'll keep you posted on how this transfer finishes out.
'Til next time,
